Daily Express ‘crusade’ recycles readers’ quotes

THE Daily Express “crusade” to get Britain out of Europe is gathering pace, so the newspaper tells us. Floods of coupons are being returned by readers demanding that Britain be withdrawn from the European Community. With 100,000 returned so far, it’s going to be the fastest-growing campaign in newspaper history, apparently.

Ignoring the rather pertinent historical point that crusades were all about uniting Europe, not breaking it up, let’s have a quick look at what one of those 100,000 readers is saying . . .

In today’s crusade update, written by Macer Hall, the Express’ political editor, we have a quote from a reader in Somerset:

Reader Graham Anthony, 39, a music studio manager from Glastonbury, Somerset, said: “We’ve got our own pound, our own currency. We don’t need to be in, half of Europe is falling apart at the moment.”

But if we flick back through the editions a week and a half to November 29 and a previous crusade update, we have another quotation from the same chap. In fact, he uses exactly the same words:

Graham Anthony, 39, a music studio manager from Glastonbury in Somerset, said: “We’ve got our own pound, our own currency. We’re pretty stable. We don’t need to be in it. Half of Europe is falling apart at the moment.”

It’s a wonderful thing is the cut and paste facility. But if people are flocking to the crusade banner in their thousands, and the Express is receiving the support it says it is receiving, why is there a need for such slipshod, half-baked, junior school journalism?
